Education & Training

Teaching Legal English is highly specialised. Not only does it require the skills of an experienced language teacher, but also an understanding of the concepts of the law on which the language is based. A competent Legal English teacher in Europe will also have an understanding of comparative law and the interface and conflicts between the Common Law, Roman Law, and the law emerging from the EU. In short, a good General English teacher is unlikely to be a good Legal English, and being a lawyer does not automatically qualify somebody to be a good Legal English teacher. It would be very rare for a lawyer or language teacher outside the Common Law system to effectively teach Legal English. Bear in mind also that most native-speakers of English don’t understand Legal English.

In Prague, at legal-english.cz you will have a highly-experienced lawyer-linguist, with extensive experience in teaching Legal English and teaching ILEC courses since they were first launched in the Czech Republic. Past students have consistently passed with C1 or C1 with Merit. All instruction is in British Legal English. ILEC Preparation

The Cambridge International Legal English Certificate (ILEC) has rapidly become the language qualification standard for lawyers acting for English-speaking clients, or wanting to work in the international arena.

In choosing your course or school you should ensure that your teacher has an understanding of Legal English, and has taught this highly-specialised programme before.

Courses

We have two ILEC programmes – First, an Extensive ILEC Exam Preparation course which will familiarise you with the areas of law tested in the exam. Secondly, our highly-focused Saturday Short-cut to ILEC for candidates unable to attend weekday classes, and to suit candidates from outside Prague.
